Acts 7: Stiff‑Necked Hearts — Ps Rainer Scharli — 22 Mar 2026

• Yielding to the Holy Spirit brings strength, clarity and courage: Stephen models a life fully surrendered to God. Instead of resisting the Spirit, he responds with obedience, peace and boldness. Believers are called to act when God prompts — not delay, not hesitate, but step out in faith.

• Stephen stands firm despite false accusations: Religious leaders twisted his teaching, used lies and stirred public opinion against him. Yet Stephen remained calm, Spirit‑filled and unshaken. His face shone with peace, showing that God’s presence steadies the heart even when opposition rises.

• The Holy Spirit speaks through surrendered vessels: Stephen wasn’t an apostle — he was a deacon serving tables — yet God used him powerfully. His defence traced Israel’s history, showing that God is not confined to temples, traditions or rituals. True worship is found in relationship, not religious performance.

• Israel’s history reveals a pattern of resisting God: Stephen highlights how the patriarchs rejected Joseph, how Israel resisted Moses, and how generations turned to idols. The religious leaders repeated the same pattern — stiff‑necked, proud, and unwilling to yield to the Holy Spirit even with truth right before them.

• A stiff‑necked heart blocks God’s leading: Stephen confronts the leaders for being “uncircumcised in heart and ears,” refusing to listen or obey. Like an ox that won’t turn with its master, a stiff‑necked believer resists God’s direction. Yielding to God brings alignment, transformation and spiritual fruit.

• Stephen’s vision reveals Jesus’ honour and Stephen’s forgiveness: As rage erupts, Stephen sees Jesus standing at the right hand of God — a sign of honour and welcome. Even while being stoned, he prays for his attackers and entrusts his spirit to Jesus. His final moments show Spirit‑filled courage, love and unwavering faith.
