Acts 17: Bridges That Lead To Jesus — Ps Karen Scharli — 21 Jun 2026

• A stirred heart for a lost world: Acts 17 shows Paul deeply moved by the spiritual darkness around him. His spirit was provoked as he saw a city full of idols, reminding believers today to stay spiritually alert, grieved for the brokenness around us, and moved with compassion rather than judgement.

• Engaging culture without compromising truth: Paul entered Athens — a centre of philosophy, art and religion — and understood the culture without becoming part of it. He listened, observed and built bridges, speaking in ways people could understand while keeping the gospel clear and uncompromised.

• Connecting before correcting: Paul began with common ground, starting from creation rather than Old Testament history. He acknowledged their altar “to the unknown God” and used it as a bridge to reveal the true, living God. His approach models how believers can connect first, then gently lead people toward truth.

• Presenting God as personal and near: Paul described God as Creator, Sustainer, Life‑giver and Sovereign over nations — yet also near to every person. He emphasised that our lives, locations and generations are not accidental, but part of God’s purposeful plan to draw people into relationship with Him.

• Calling people to repentance and new life: After revealing who God is, Paul moved to the gospel’s demand — repentance. He declared that God now commands all people to turn to Him, and pointed to the resurrection of Jesus as the proof of God’s authority and the hope of salvation.

• Different responses, same mission: Some mocked Paul, others were curious, and a few believed — including respected leaders in Athens. Acts 17 reminds believers that not everyone will respond the same way, but faithful engagement, Spirit‑led wisdom and genuine love will always bear fruit.
