• Submission Begins With God’s Lordship: Paul teaches that all authority ultimately comes from God. Believers submit to governing structures not because rulers are perfect, but because God is sovereign. Submission is first a posture of honour toward Him.
• Respect Authority Without Blind Obedience: Scripture never demands unquestioning compliance. When earthly commands contradict God’s will, believers may respectfully decline — following biblical examples like Daniel, the apostles and the Hebrew midwives.
• Government Exists to Promote Order and Justice: Paul describes the intended role of government as protecting the innocent, restraining evil and promoting good. Christians pray for leaders, live peacefully and act with integrity, trusting God’s justice above human systems.
• Practise Reverence and Integrity in Daily Life: Submission includes practical obedience such as paying taxes, showing respect and living honourably. Reverence for God shapes how believers conduct themselves publicly and privately, reflecting Christ in all interactions.
• Love Fulfils God’s Commands: Paul shifts from authority to love, teaching that genuine love avoids harm, seeks the good of others and fulfils the heart of the law. Believers obey not out of fear, but because God’s love has transformed their hearts.
• Live Awake, Holy and Ready: Paul urges believers to cast off darkness, reject compromise and “put on Christ.” Submission to God’s will leads to a life marked by purity, urgency, spiritual clarity and a commitment to honour Jesus in every season.
